Quick Review
Syntax is the study of how words are put together to make sentences
Words belong to lexical categories (= parts of speech).
Word order is important.
Words form constituents, that is, groups of words that ‘go together’ and function as a unit.
Constituents nest inside one another at different levels to form a hierarchical structure.

Many students struggle with this, so don’t worry!
Work together in pairs to complete these steps (in this order!):
Identify which part is the subject and which part is the predicate. Remember, your predicate will start with the verb, and everything before it is (in these examples) the subject!
Label each word in the sentence with the correct parts of speech. Pay attention to the context!
Try to make constituents – this will be a noun phrase (NP) subject and a verb phrase (VP) predicate. Hint: each sentence here includes an embedded prepositional phrase (PP) in the VP!
The final trees will look VERY SIMILAR to the one on the previous slide!
